Muslim Parents (Most): Why are you so repressive and oppressive of your daughters?
I realize, Islam teaches you to raise your children (especially daughters) the "right way" and to guide them and you also (as parents) have the status of being supreme in child’s life after Allah. For example, "He who wishes to enter Paradise through its best door must please his parents."
but why must so many of you be so controlling and repressive? i think that it is more detrimental for your child.
In my own case, my parents, even though we live in america, have forbidden me from talking to any boys or ever hanging out with friends. it’s unfair to me because they just expect me to sit at home and go to school and occasionally do some activities (perhaps one birthday party where there are only all girls once a year). to please my parents, i’ve never gone to any sweet 16s, any formals, any dances, never talked to boys, never hung out with friends (even my best friends) and have decided to not go to prom. i didn’t want to date nor do i have any intention of doing so but its gotten to the point where i just want to rebel and break out against all these restrictions. i cannot take being cooped up anymore. i want to socialize and talk to people and not worry about them being boys or that i cannot get too close to someone since i wouldn’t be able to hang out with them outside of school anyways! i pray and read Quran, i am knowledgeable about my religion but just because i want to just socialize with my peers doesn’t mean that i will become a "bad" or "tainted" girl or become too "american"!
my dad threatens me that we will move back to our native country, which is 90% muslim, if he ever finds me becoming too westernized which i think makes no sense since all 4 of my cousins living there have dated and 2 of them are engaged to their boy/girl friend.
and that’s not all, i know many muslims girls (most of whom are my intimate friends) and they all face the same issues that i do with their parents. out of the 30 or so i know, i know that at 20 or so of them live double lives and in fact do date and stay out but do so behind their parents backs.
in the end, i think that this forces children into a corner. we want to be like other kids (and yes i know most of the responders will say, "well, the only thing you need is religion" or "shame on you for thinking you’re like other kids") but we want to socialize and stay out past 6 in the evening.
i am not suggesting dating or anything like that but i want to be able to eat out with my friends, watch movies with them, hang out, shop, etc
right now, im so backed into a corner that my only alternatives are either to begin lying and sneaking behind my parents (like a majority of the muslim girls i know) or being depressed and lonely and stuck waiting for the day my parents deem me ready to marry off. theres only so many hours of praying and reciting Quran that i can handle before the depression overpowers and makes everything seem hopeless and lonely like it is beginning to seem.
Western parents: why you let your daugter be whore? why wear no hijab, you want for them to be sodomiz

Your parents are doing what they think is best for you. But maybe it isn’t. Depression can become serious. You need to talk to your parents and ask them if you can have a bit more freedom. Don’t ask for too much. Just ask for maybe an 8:00 curfew instead of 6. Or see if you can start going dinner with friends. All you really have to do is prove to your parents that you are responsible. Make them trust you.

Sorry, but you have to lie. Moving to a muslim country will absolutely end any chance you have for anything approaching a free life. If you are in a western country there is no way for you to be married off by your parents unless you go along with it. I would suggest you plan ahead for your emancipation. You must be able to survive on your own.

Whats so wrong with hanging out with your friends. Ask them why they don’t allow you. And bring them over one day to your home and they can meet them.
If you want to talk to boys then talk to them at school, its not like they spy on you.
Take charge, you are your own person but remember some day you can move out and enjoy life the way you want to.
They don’t trust you.
